Absolutely phenomenal. Let's start this review there. I cannot tell you how much incredible talent there is featured in this Play On! The Musical. The sheer effortlessness of the whole teams voices & specialty of this musical was fantastic. Honestly, be prepared to be wowed & have goosebumps throughout watching. I can't wait for you to jive right in to see this performance.
Set against the backdrop of New York's Cotton Club jazz scene, Play On! is an uplifting hit musical that blends the exhilarating sounds of Duke Ellington with vibrant street dance choreography. You couldn't help yourself but to dance along with the performers during this show, the energy was infectious. The whole team of ensembles dance moves were perfectly in sync & their excited expressions were contagious.
The storyline, while simple yet engaging, weaves together themes of love, ambition, and the struggles of the creative process. The characters are well-developed, each bringing their unique flair to the stage. The lead performances are particularly noteworthy, showcasing both vocal talent and impressive dance skills that left the whole audience in awe.
The vocal performances from the cast were absolutely phenomenal, giving me goosebumps throughout the show. I must give a special mention to Koko Alexandra, who played Lady Liv—her voice is simply spectacular, hitting every note with flawless precision. Next to her was the incredible Tsemaye Bob-Edge as Viola/Vyman; her vocal and acting prowess were truly outstanding.
Earl Gregory, portraying The Duke, was born for this role—his acting skills were impeccable. Cameron Bernard Jones, who played Rev, showcased his talent with smooth dance moves, particularly shining in a memorable scene in a striking yellow suit that you won't want to miss. Lifford Shillingford, as Sweets, surprised the entire audience with an extraordinary performance that came out of nowhere.
Every performer contributed to making this musical an unforgettable experience. The casting for this production was spot-on, bringing together a remarkable group of talents!
Overall, "Play On!" is a charming and entertaining musical that celebrates the spirit of creativity and the joy of putting on a show. Whether you're a theatre enthusiast or new to the scene, it's a fabulous experience that will leave you smiling! I certainly couldn't stop smiling throughout the performance with how infectious the presence was of the whole cast. They really did make the night an absolute night to remember.
