Little Women Review - Belgrade Theatre

Watching Anne-Marie Casey’s new adaptation of Little Women felt like stepping into a familiar, comforting hug. From the very beginning, I was drawn into the world of the March sisters – tomboyish Jo, graceful Meg, tender-hearted Beth, and spirited Amy – as they navigated the challenges of the Civil War era with courage, ambition, and unwavering love for each other. It was like being invited into their home, sharing in their joys and heartaches as if they were my own.

What really struck me was the perfect balance of humour and emotion. There were moments of laugh-out-loud sisterly teasing that made the whole audience laugh, especially where Laurence said Jo's hair looked like a porcupine. The emotional shifts felt natural and the connection between the sisters was so authentic that it was impossible not to feel completely invested in their story.

Casey’s adaptation made the story feel fresh and alive while staying true to Louisa May Alcott’s original message. The March sisters’ determination to follow their dreams and define their own futures felt incredibly relevant, reminding me that women can be bold, persistent and the heroes of their own stories. It was rather inspiring to watch their stories unfold. It’s amazing how a story first told over 150 years ago can still resonate so deeply today.

The cast was brilliant. Jo’s fierce independence, Meg’s quiet strength, Beth’s sweet gentleness, and Amy’s playful charm were brought to life with such warmth and authenticity. I found myself rooting for each of them, feeling their triumphs and setbacks as if they were my own. I also loved how stern & abruptly hilarious the Aunt was! Definitely one to look out for if you are going to watch this performance.

This production wasn’t just a performance – it was an experience. It made me laugh, feel emotion and reflect on the bonds of sisterhood and the strength of women. Anne-Marie Casey’s Little Women reminded me why this story has stood the test of time and I walked away feeling both uplifted and deeply moved.

If you'd like to experience Little Women for yourself, the performance is on from Wednesday 19th March 2025 - Saturday 22nd March 2025. Book your tickets here at the Belgrade Theatre.
