Fashion | Why I Put Myself On A Spending Ban From Buying New Clothes

A spending ban is not something I do when it comes to clothes, but this time I'm actually doing pretty well. The reason for this is the fact, I have one wardrobe at home which is purely for coats, gym wear, jeans and trousers, cami tops, PJ's, underwear and shoes. But I then have a rail full of all my other clothes as well as shoes all underneath, at least 4 rows of around 5/6 pairs, which is now seeming to grow even more. But I wanted to be able to share this journey of putting a spending ban on myself for not buying new clothes etc as a learning curve to recreate in my wardrobe and not just buy new things because they are pretty or because they are on trend. So let's begin into this side of my style that I will be delving into...

We all fall into that trap, in Primark for me especially, of all the new season clothes, trends and all the pretty clothes around us on the high street and online. I'm more a shop on the high street rather than online, as save the environment with all the packaging, and I'm not about that extra money for postage and packaging. But anyway, I used to LOVE, or should I say be obsessed with going into Primark and just picking up anything and everything I liked the look of and throwing it into my basket. I haven't actually done that in quite a few weeks now and not long ago I walked into Primark and didn't even buy one single thing as much as I was tempted to - COME ON WILL POWER! Go me woo! I do have a YouTube video going up soon - probably up by the time you've read this, which is a Primark Haul which is from about a month ago - late I know right. But I still wanted to post it even though this was before my spending ban as people seem to love those hauls.

My main thing to think about when I'm in shops is, do I really need this? The main thing I've been spending my money on if I'm honest lately is, food and fuel for my car. That's literally it apart from your usual bills etc.

One way of stopping myself from buying new clothes is to experiment with what I already have, and if I'm honest, I've been loving switching up my usual day to day work wear and adding more colour and different pieces to outfits, especially within accessories. I've been loving wearing different necklaces, earrings and anklets to switch things up more. As you can see in this outfit, I'm wearing polka dots which I've realised I actually adore and I've had this dress in my wardrobe for some time waiting to be worn and taken photos of. I wore it with my favourite New Look wedges I've honestly had for years with of course my favourite Gucci belt that I seem to wear with everything. I love how my jacket - bought from Primark last year, matches with the outfit too.

Since my spending ban, I have been a lot more creative as I've not allowed myself to buy anything new and just accept what I already have and work with that. As I used to look at my clothes and think, what am I going to wear today? And that's where we feel like we need new clothes when we really don't! We just need inspiration and even Pinterest is a good bet for this as I have loads of outfits pinned to boards that I look at when I'm feeling unmotivated about my clothes and then it clicks, a new outfit is born! Just getting more creative is so much more uplifting and refreshing with the clothes you already have.

So let's see how long I can keep up my spending ban and just stay within my rules and just explore my own wardrobe and style, as there's so many pieces I own that I've either never worn or only worn once, so I definitely need to keep this up for a while!

Have you ever put yourself on a spending ban or thought of doing it?
