Umami World Cuisine Coventry

The new all you can eat world cuisine buffet to step into Coventry. Taking over what used to be known as Cosmos for those fellow Coventrians. Imagine a spiral staircase entrance with modern and warm interiors with a luxurious feel. A fabulous Instagram worthy display as soon as you enter the building, which of course we had to get the obligatory shot. Let’s dive into a world full of all you can eat deliciousness.

Food

Let’s of course start off with the food, with a help yourself buffet, you are spoilt for choice. From a Carvery to British, Italian to Indian, Thai to Chinese, Teppanyaki to Sushi and even a flaming grill BBQ. There is SO much for everyone. There’s even a chocolate fountain, dessert and fruit section that has a wide variety of choice that you simply can’t decide! You can watch the chefs make the food fresh in front of you all around the buffet area. With a built in kitchen in the middle of the restaurant which you can walk around and help yourself with ease. I found it fascinating that you could watch the chef behind the flaming grill cooking away, this was very popular with the customers also.

As for the overall taste of the food, I rather enjoyed it. I tried the pizza, chips, onion rings and a bit of curry sauce for my first plate. The margarita pizza was lush! They had a range of pepperoni, mixed vegetables and more for pizza choices. A bit of a mix for my first plate but was delish.

My second plate was a plate full of lovely Indian food - my favourite I might add. A curry, rice, poppadoms, naan bread, samosas and chips. I tried a lentil curry which was one of not very many vegetarian options I noticed. It was a lovely curry but I wish that they had more vegetarian or vegan options. As vegan options they were definitely lacking unfortunately, that’s something I will say, if you are vegan (which I was a former vegan and also prefer eating vegan food), it’s probably not the best place to visit with the labelling not stating vegan. Their labelling was very good though I might add, with all the allergens that were in the dishes, so quite good really, just the lack of vegan options.

Onto my third plate which was dessert, again I found this rather difficult to find many vegetarian options, let alone vegan options. There was a fruit area which was lovely to have, especially as a healthier addition to all the sweet treats. I tried the strawberry cake which was nice but the sponge could have been more moist (I know not everyone likes this word but it’s the best word to use for a cake sponge). They had a lot of different choices for dessert though, cake pops, brownies, cakes, jelly, meringue, an ice cream machine and more. Of course don’t forget there’s a chocolate fountain and a popcorn machine.

Overall the food was lovely and I couldn’t fault how tasty it was with SO much different choices. The only downside was the lack of vegetarian/vegan options - this is also coming from an extremely fussy eater so don’t take my word for it, this is just my opinion. We did visit on a Saturday night so it was a full house, but I did feel like the dishes that were empty, especially on the chocolate fountain and dessert area I felt needed to be restocked quicker, but everything else was restocked rather quickly.

Drinks

When we arrived and were seated at our table, the waiters were quick to order our drinks which was fab. Myself and my partner had non alcoholic beverages but there was a range of beers, ciders, wines, spirits, cocktails, mocktails, non alcoholic beers and ciders to choose from. I went for a passion fruit style mocktail which was delicious, I’m always one for a mocktail over anything else on the drinks menu. Where as my partner Adam went for a non alcoholic Kopparberg.

Service

I have to say the service was wonderful. The staff were lovely, attentive and super friendly to everyone. They were very good at keeping the customers tables clean once they’d finished their plates and very well mannered. Which in my opinion is very much appreciated when there’s well mannered staff.

Cleanliness

The restaurant was very clean and tidy, hand sanitiser and signs on every station with signs to encourage people to use it before picking up a plate - which I didn’t actually see many people do unfortunately considering how we all went through a pandemic a few years back, but of course this is down to customers rather than the restaurant. One thing I will say is, I think the restaurant should (if they haven’t already) have someone go round and clean the handles on the utensils on a regular basis. Other than that I would say the restaurant was very clean and tidy. Also a stack of plates were accidentally tipped over by a customer and the staff were extremely quick to react to this and got it cleaned up within a matter of seconds. Top notch staff and cleanliness.

Pricing

The pricing is Mon-Thurs £19.99, Friday £20.99, Saturday £21.99 and Sunday £20.99 plus drinks. Which I thought for the buffet was reasonable considering how you aren’t limited to the amount of food or plates you can choose from. Plus when you think of ALL the choices you have, this would be so much more elsewhere. Something I do think the restaurant should add in is the unlimited soft drinks that most places do (if they don’t already that is). I also noticed in their website when you book a table you only have 1 hour and 30 mins so bare this in mind for when you visit.

Location

Located on 36 Corporation street in the centre of Coventry. A stones throw away from the Belgrade theatre, so a brilliant place to go for an all you can eat dinner before seeing a show or even a pit stop during a day spent shopping in the centre. It’s super easy to park nearby in West Orchards or the NCP car park over the road.

Overall the restaurant is a brilliant new addition to the town centre and Coventry as a whole, as an all you can eat buffet with so many cuisines is definitely something Coventry was missing. The staff were lovely, food was super delicious and I left feeling satisfied with a full stomach and going home wanting a nap! I would definitely recommend you checking it out for yourself and seeing what you think of the new addition.
