BEST PANTOMIME THERE IS. There, I said it. End of.
The best show of the year is back to Coventry with the famous Belgrade Theatre pantomime, this year being Dick Whittington. What a SHOW they put on. From the costumes to the lighting, to the constant smiles on the audiences faces & absolute howling of laughter, to the fantastic cast & set designers, this is a show you DO NOT want to miss!
Every year I visit the Belgrade Theatre in my home town of Coventry & watch in awe of the yearly pantomime. No matter what show they do, every year just gets bigger and better without a doubt! The jokes are always so relevant & current, with insanely brilliant costumes - shoutout to the costume designer (James Maciver) for always nailing every little detail to perfection. If you are local to Coventry & have ever seen a Belgrade Theatre pantomime before, you will know of the fantastic Iain Lauchlan who is always the Dame every year and of course writes & directs the shows as well. We were lucky enough to see him being applauded for his 30 years of performing at the Belgrade, so this is Iain's shoutout to how brilliant you are every single year in every show. Constantly putting smiles on everyones faces & creating laughter for everyone until their face hurts.
The whole set was magnificent, with every little detail being absolute perfection. So colourful, bright & of course theatrical. Ian Westbrook, the set designer for the Belgrade pantomime, created such a vision! You will be in absolute awe as soon as you step into the the main theatre with all the colours, sparkles & details that have been perfectly curated & designed. I feel like the people behind the scenes don't get enough credit for these shows, so this is a shoutout to the whole team behind the scenes from the choreographer to assistant director, lighting & sound designers to musical director. They created a fantastic show!
Of course, I can't not mention the incredible cast for Dick Whittington. Let's start with Aonghas Ewen who played Scratch, they are one to watch, my goodness, they are MADE for Broadway!! The energy, the sass & style that Aonghas brought to the stage was honestly unforgettably brilliant. Alongside Sam Woods who played Tommy the Cat, another fantastic performer which the entire audience loved! I always want to mention everyone in these reviews, but I could go on forever with how brilliant the whole cast was, from the main lead Dick Whittington played by Lois Brook to Andy Hockey who played King Rat. Declan Wilson who played 2 roles of Alderman Fitzwarren/Sultan of Morocco & Gabriela Harris who plays Alice Fitzwarren/Fairy Bowbells, the fact these 2 play 2 separate roles is such a talent & the way they remember everything so well! Also the costume for Fairy Bowbells was my favourite.
Overall, you have to see the show! With the usual unforgettable pantomime features of 'If I were not in pantomime' scene, the huge production scene that you will have to watch & see what it is, the sing along part & of course, the classic, 'IT'S BEHIND YOU' moments. The pantomime is perfect for all ages, from small children to adults, to grandparents or older people, you will leave the show with a glowing smile & face hurting from how much you've belly laughed at how brilliant it is.
The show is on from 20th November 2024 to 4th January 2025, but make sure you grab tickets fast as you honestly don't want to miss this show full of fun! Book tickets at the Belgrade Theatre here.
