Handbagged - What Might Of Happened Between Margaret Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth II - Belgrade Theatre Review

I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Handbagged at the Belgrade Theatre, and I can confidently say it was a brilliant evening of theatre. I took my mum along, she’s a huge fan of history, politics and anything to do with the royal family, so this was right up her street. And as someone who loves watching The Crown and diving into the history of the monarchy myself, I found it equally captivating. One shall dive right in & tell you all about it!

Moira Buffini has written a witty, clever and sharply insightful piece that imagines what might have taken place behind closed doors between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher. The result is a comedy full of biting humour, historical references and plenty of food for thought.

The actresses playing the Queen and Thatcher were absolutely phenomenal. Their performances were layered, commanding and incredibly entertaining. The entire cast deserves recognition for how seamlessly they transitioned between multiple roles, it was genuinely impressive to see such versatility on stage.

A special shoutout to the two male actors who effortlessly switched between accents and roles with such ease, it was truly impressive. Hats off to the entire cast for mastering such a complex and dialogue-heavy script so flawlessly.

A special mention must go to the set design, particularly the giant coin backdrop, it was striking, imaginative and incredibly effective in tying the themes of monarchy and power together visually. Whoever came up with that concept deserves a serious shoutout!

If you’re interested in British history, politics, the Royal Family or simply enjoy a smart, funny and educational night out, Handbagged is not to be missed. It’s thought-provoking, hilarious and brilliantly executed.

Handbagged is showcasing at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry between Tuesday 29th April 2025 to Saturday 3rd May 2025. If you particularly love anything about history within the Royal Family including a bit of humour, you might actually enjoy this.
