If you’re dreaming of a luxury countryside escape with a touch of an equestrian feel, let me introduce you to the newly opened Polo Club Hotel in Southam, a staycation that feels like stepping into a regal dream.
From the moment I arrived, it felt like I had entered a palace designed for polo lovers and lovers of luxury alike. Think glasses of champagne sipped from a private balcony as majestic horses gallop across the polo pitch in front of you. The interiors are absolutely exquisite. Blue, gold, and crisp white tones run throughout, creating a timeless, elegant aesthetic that instantly inspired me to rethink my home decor.
Nestled in the picturesque English countryside, this hotel is perfectly situated for those wanting a peaceful yet well-connected base. A short drive can take you to the Cotswolds, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bicester Village, Leamington Spa and even the grandeur of Blenheim Palace. It’s the kind of location where you can truly unwind but still have the option to explore nearby gems.
The Rooms
The rooms at the Polo Club Hotel are nothing short of royal. Spacious, tastefully decorated and bathed in natural light, they nod to Italian influences while embracing quintessential British elegance. The bed was incredibly comfortable, easily one of the best I’ve ever slept in (and I don’t say that lightly).
The view from our balcony overlooked the polo pitch, making it the ideal spot to enjoy a glass of wine at dusk or reflect under the stars in the evening. A true moment of serenity. There's even the exquisitely beautiful Empress Suite that would be worth booking, especially for a wedding, definitely look into this one!
The bathroom was another highlight, his and hers sinks, luxurious ESPA toiletries, and a large walk-in waterfall shower. Add in those fluffy robes and hotel towels and you have a spa-like experience that you’ll wish you could recreate at home. I certainly wanted to bring the hotel robe home it was so cosy & soft.
There's also an onsite gym we utilised during our stay which had country music playing - loved this touch!
The Chukka Lounge
I must mention the Chukka Lounge, the hotel's meeting room, which left quite the impression. Decorated with antique polo memorabilia and equestrian artwork, it's the kind of space that blends business with beauty. I couldn’t help but imagine hosting an elegant event or meeting there, all while enjoying sweeping views of the polo pitch & the onsite Rolls Royce they have that is even more beautiful to look at.
Dining: Honest Thoughts
Here’s where the hotel has room to grow. While there isn’t an on-site restaurant (yet, fingers crossed for an A La Carte as this would really set off the hotel), there is a traditional pub just a short 3-minute walk along the polo pitch. The setting is lovely, overlooking the showjumping arena, and the menu offers classic pub favourites. We enjoyed a halloumi salad, mixed grill and chips, washed down with a glass of cream liqueur.
However, I want to be transparent, as I'm always honest. Our initial welcome at the pub was not as warm as expected. Although we had reserved a table, we were directed to sit in a very loud area, which we politely declined in favour of a quieter corner. Thankfully, the rest of the evening was pleasant, and the staff who served us later were friendly and helpful.
Breakfast back at the hotel was delightful. Although avocado on toast wasn’t officially listed, the team kindly prepared it for me. The menu offers a lovely selection, from a continental spread to full English breakfasts, with vegetarian and vegan options, and eggs cooked in various ways (my fiancĂ© enjoyed the Eggs Florentine). It was the perfect start to a slow countryside morning.
Service
One of the standout features of the Polo Club Hotel was the exceptional staff. Friendly, attentive and genuinely welcoming, they made our stay feel even more special. It’s always the people who make a place and the team here deserve the real credit.
Final Thoughts
The Polo Club Hotel is a dreamy destination for anyone seeking a luxurious countryside escape with a unique equestrian flair. It’s romantic, relaxing and undeniably beautiful. While the absence of a fine-dining restaurant is something I hope they’ll address in the future, the experience overall was absolutely memorable.
My advice would be to, stay for the comfort, the charm, the views and the sense of calm, but plan your evening meals accordingly. I’d return in a heartbeat.
