Advice | How To Start Your Own Healing Journey

Isobel Celine

Healing takes time, and time is the biggest healer. 2023 & life in general has thrown some hurdles my way in life, but I take it in my stride & realised what really matters in life. I'm bringing this post to you today, to take you along on how I've been on a healing journey, I wouldn't say just recently, for a few years really. I've had many emotionally upsetting times, but I wouldn't change it as if these things didn't happen, I wouldn't have learnt how to cope with them or have become such an emotionally strong young lady I am today.

When it comes to healing, I've found, more so recently, that you need to ACTUALLY give yourself time to feel and heal. It never helps to push your emotions away & just put a smile on your face. There's nothing wrong with that, but I've found that by doing so, you're allowing the emotions to constantly build up & then one day it all just comes out. I'm here to tell you, no matter whether you are a man or a woman, you need to allow yourself to feel or cry, you just need to let your emotions out so they don't build up inside. I'm going to share with you a few tips that I've found that really help me tune in to my inner self & support me in feeling my true emotions.

Music

I've learnt that I really enjoy classical music, especially Ludivico Einaudi. There's something about his music that really makes me FEEL. You know when you tap into your inner self & feel that lump in your throat that makes you just want to ball your eyes out? I also get that feeling when I listen to some Ed Sheeran songs. Sometimes listening to certain music really helps in allowing yourself to feel and I certainly put on that kind of music when I want to let my emotions out. Certain music really helps to make me cry and feel the pain I've pushed deep down and to just let it all out. There's nothing better than having a good cry to let out all that emotional pain you feel so heavily in your chest. Especially when you've been through a time of emotional pain, grieving or losing someone in your life whether that be a relationship, friendship or family member. Music is one of the best things to help you really see how you feel inside & let it out.

Podcasts

I've not actually listened to any podcasts in quite some time, but I've found that podcasts that are filled with positivity & uplifting content really helps. Growing & Glowing is a beautiful podcast to listen to by Elle Swift where she talks about spirituality, positive vibes & feelings etc. There's loads of podcasts out there that can help, it's finding the right one for you. If you're thinking, I really don't have time to listen to podcasts, then maybe instead of having the radio on in the car or the Alexa playing music in the house, try having a podcast on whilst you're driving or cleaning the house. It's really lovely to have on in the background for you to listen to.

Gym Routine

The gym isn't for everyone, but I'd say the gym has been my absolute saviour these past few years. Especially in 2023. It's released emotions that I'd held inside & brought in positive ones. The endorphins that I feel after a workout in the gym, really sets me up for the day. Getting up & going to the gym 4 times a week has put me in such a good routine. There's also one song I love to listen to in the gym, 'Unstoppable' by Sia. Next time you're on a walk or at the gym, give it a listen & tune into how powerful you feel. As you are UNSTOPPABLE. I'd say that's my song of 2023, and it's kept me motivated to keep going in life and not let anyone get in the way of getting where I want to be in life.

Healthy Food Balance

Of course going to the gym goes hand in hand with a healthy diet. I would say I eat rather healthily, but if I fancy some sweets or chocolate or a processed food meal I'll have it. Eat what you want in life but in a healthy way is what I say. Also having a good relationship with food helps, even if you are going through a bad relationship with food, take your time to heal, be patient with yourself & be proud of how far you've come.

Positive Mindset

Having a positive mindset during your healing process really helped me. No matter what life has thrown at me, I will always resort to my positive mindset, as your mindset is everything. Training yourself & your mind on how to react to different situations supports your anxiety & coping skills too I've noticed. Starting with a positive mindset has to be one of the main steps on starting your own healing journey.

Journaling

Healing of course starts with tuning into your inner feelings & thoughts. Digging deep into where it all started that's made you want to start your healing journey. Tuning into these feelings will give you a starting point on where you want to heal from, it could be something you've been healing from since you were a child without realising, or its a break-up. Realising where these feelings first stemmed from is a brilliant starting point, & getting them all down on paper is a a good way to start.

Having a daily journal to write your thoughts in honestly really helps you feel like a weight has been taken off your shoulders. I have 2 separate journals I use, a gratitude journal that I write in the morning and evening (not every day, just when I feel like doing so), where I write about what I'm grateful for that day, what I dreamt about at night,  positive things from that day, what worried me & how I can reduce those worries, what I'm excited about. and things to remember. I also have a wellness journal where I track my food & water intake, my thoughts & feelings for that day, what I plan on doing to get my body moving, how much sleep I've had, what I'm thankful for that day & what went well that day.

Overall, these are just some ways to start your healing journey. It all depends on how you feel & how you plan on learning how to cope & feel to start healing. What ever you are going through,  I know you are strong enough to get through it, you just need to believe in yourself x
